One requirements I had for both of my sons was to work in manufacturing during the summer months to learn what the middle class people do for living. I did it during my college years and it was great training as I went on to become a VP of a large manufacturing company after college. It taught them the hardships of factory work and made them want to study harder.

When I became a VP, I also required new college graduates that worked for me and others to spend two weeks working on the shop floor as part of their induction training . Engineers, accountants, procurement staff, and other professions. During those two weeks they had to implement 5 cost saving ideas( and it wasn’t just firing someone). After they were full time workers in their hired position, they replied that they really enjoyed the experience….except for getting up at 5 AM to go to work…
