I am testing Deepseek vs OpenAI for my programming work by giving each the same task and comparing the results. Deepseek is as good or even better. In one test creating a complex SQL query Deepseek got it right first time while ChatGPT made an error that would have returned invalid data. Although in one case Deepseek created a faulty test data item for a unit test, though the unit test that it had created found its own error. It is not perfect, just as good as OpenAIs models.

Asked both ChatGPT and DeepSeek to write a Matlab script simulating the PowerBall game.

Round 1 - ChatGPT’s script took, on average, 1.09 second to for every 1, 000, 000 tickets. DeepSeek: 0.75.

Round 2 - asked both DeepSeek and ChatGPT to optimize the speed of the slower ChatGPT code from Round 1. DeepSeek dramatically improved the speed to 0.48 second per 1, 000, 000 tickets generated, while ChatGPT made its own code slightly worse to 1.12 second.

ChatGPT wins in certain administrative tasks, such as giving user the ability to organize chats under different projects. But DeepSeek wins in performance related tasks, such as coding.
