So used to a fixed shade, when somebody hands me their auto darkening, I’ll have the hood down and still sling my head forward not realizing it’s already down 😂

My granddad was a Boiler maker back in 1961 and retired in 2006 I started my Boiler making apprenticeship in 2017 I showed him my Auto Darkening Helmet and his mind was blown, he got so excited he took out his old stick welder to give it a go and literally built an entire new Bar just so he could use the helmet, at the end of the day he said he wishes he had this back in those days, Just because you use a fixed lens it doesn't make you look cooler or superior to anyone else you'll always find Wise Old school Boilermakers loving the new tech coming out

My first time welding was in my buddies backyard. I was talking about going to welding school so he was like “Yeah man come try it out”. He gave me his autodark and I started running a bead with it. BRIGHT AS ALL SHIT. It was like staring at the sun and trying to work. I was like “Holy shit! Welding is SO HARD how do they see anything?”. After about fifteen seconds I was like “Man can you adjust this darker or something?”

Turns out his battery was dead and I was running a bead with zero shade. Thankfully my eyes were fine, but I was seeing phantom puddles for the rest of the day. I’ve been employed now for four months, long road ahead but I’m tigging aluminum and stainless steel, improving my craft little by little.

I had the darkest lens and my welding instructor apologized after putting my hood on 🤧 I had to learn stick in the dark.

If you want my auto hood you'll have to kill me for it.

Ight so in high school I started welding for the first time ever, used an auto darkening lense, community college welding, gave us a solid shade lense. Holy cow they are different, after about two weeks I purchased my own helmet.

I've used auto darkening and fixed shade. I have both. Believe it or not my fixed shade is my go to. I see out of it better when I'm welding.

Idk why, I've always been able to see better with a fixed shade after I got going, than any auto dark after I strike my arc.

Welding looks so easy, but I just struck my first arc a couple weeks back and now I understand lol

I was trained with both. Its nice to weld like the old timers but I prefer auto darkening

As a welder for ten yrs, everyone has their lense and this and that, that’s why welding is an art no one person can do the same weld

Old School... certified MIG/SMAW all position, unlimited in Feb 1981 and welded hulls and frames for Electric Boat on Trident class and Los Angeles class subs. I recently retired from the Ironworkers Union and worked at the local nuclear power plant. I can use either or. Love my auto darkening lens that fits just about any standard hood but in a pinch I can still tip an old school hood and hit the target.
