In this video I will be showing you how I built another type of umbrella stand for my mobile welding rig. The umbrella stand I use most of the time is called a slam pole, or that is the slang term. In this video, we will be building another umbrella stand that is a bit more simple to build. Follow along and have fun as we dive in to this simple beginner welding project yet a very useful tool once we get done! It will be a nice add on for your welding rig or heck maybe even your camping gear! Also, remember to learn somethin!

Brother I always love watching your channel. I've been welding for over 35 years, but always love to learn by watching other folks ideas, and techniques. I was taught at a young age by my grand pa that you can always learn something new even if it's something you've been doing for years. There's always a better way. Just watch and learn, and if you can help teach them a better way. God made us all individuals with different ideas and talents, to help each other. Let's all learn and work together. God bless and work safe.

I always kick myself when my rods stick thinking I’m doing something wrong or don’t yet have enough experience. Glad you didn’t edit that out, let’s us know it can happen to anybody.

Well, I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one that has a problem with rods sticking!

I think I can do that, thanks for the lesson. I'll accumulate some metal for Christmas and see what I can do. Thanks for sharing with us Austin. Stay safe around there and keep having fun. Fred.

Hi, Austin! I've been always wondering how new welders are born. Well, after seeing you holding a stinger in the right place I kind of finally got the idea. :)

Your attitude and work ethic inspired me to start making videos about the type of work I do. Thank you Austin for helping me get more confident

My grandfather was a dust bowl okie. His family settled in lathrop ca due to the rail hub in that area at that time. The railway provided an income both legally and illegally. Rail workers frequented my grandmother’s store and my 9 year old grandfather rode the trains to get to the areas harvesting fruits.

That being said, my grandfather always looking for better paying work landed in the pre WWII ship yards of Oakland ca. as it was told to me, he advised, he looked around for the best paying job and in his mind it was the “burners”, the Oxyacetylene torch operators made the best money. So he would learn the torch on breaks. When asked about his skills he lied, and said that he learned them in his dads garage.

Eventually he got the “burner” job at the shipyard.

And eventually he was sent to war in the pacific.

However…. He had a skill. The oxyacetylene torch. And the us gov put him to work in the Philippines.

Building water tanks or cutting tank barriers, that guy was running a torch for America.

So… when I see torch video I have a soft spot in my heart

I didn’t hear if you mentioned what rod you were using but it sure seems like 7018. A tip if you restart a rod, pull it out of the holder and clean the tip. You can tap it straight down a few times or I like to simply drag the tip across the bench a few times to clean it. It takes about as long to try and restart.
