With a population of almost 4 million and growing at the rate of just over 5% a year, Kampala's population is expected to have exceeded 7 million by 2035, which is only 12 years from now. Where will all those people live? I think that of all the problems we are facing in the city, housing would be the most difficult to grapple with, followed by the scarcity of jobs.

Worse still, the city leadership today is in turmoil, since the creation of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) back in 2010. It has allowed the central government to usurp the powers of the elected officials of the city, by appointing the Director of Kampala, who is not accountable to the residents of the city at all. As a result, the residents of Kampala have no say whatsoever in how their city is governed.

Finally, there comes a point in people's lives, whereby such a situation may become intolerable. The 7 million population would be a powerful political base to be reckoned with which can never be ignored. Interference by the central government would become a serious issue the residents can no longer tolerate. I can predict that the law that created the KCCA would most likely be repealed, thereby doing away with the Director of Kampala and restoring the authority to run the city to the Lord Mayor, the City Council and the residents of Kampala where it belongs.
