You can tell, from the bishop's shaking hand as he says "excommunicated heretic", that the only reason why he gave Trevor a chance to walk out of Gresit unscathed, instead of executing him on the spot (especially after he beat up two of his priests), was because he knew better than to pick a fight with a Belmont, especially with the church in its current state.
