Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky, my next 3 reads, and a quick book haul

To be honest, it was so difficult talking about Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment simply because the book and its theme are so dense, it was impossible to narrow it all down to just one video. But I did manage to do that and also talk about my next 3 reads.

The Sorrows of Young Werther by Goethe
Hurricane Season by Fernanda Melchor
Closely Watched Trains by Bohumil Hrabal
Anti-Oedipus by Félix Guattari and Gilles Deleuze
Insane by Rainald Goetz
A Death in the Family and A Man in Love by Knausgaard

You are so well spoken.
Well spoken is eloquence paired with clarity of thought. It's a rare, dying breed of brilliance.

That, more than anything, makes it a breeze and a joy to watch your reviews.

And your taste is impeccable.
I usually steer clear of recommendations and influence when it comes to reading, because I'm in love with the feeling of finding something out on my own.

But I think I am going to make an exception in the case of your recommendations or just what you read.

“Alyosha blushes” from Brothers Karamazov is the same as “Raskolnikov faints” from Crime and Punishment. Great review. Loved the recommendations too, I’ll go for Sea, The Sea next.

Absolutely loved the video. Read dostoevesky 2 years back and I still think about it to this day. Wanted a refresher on c&p and this video was perfect. Been following your channel for some time now. Keep doing this.

Really intriguing. I'm also finally starting with Russian lit in a couple of days with Anna Karenina. But because of this video, I might read this one after AK!

I think the basic problem with Raskolnikov is that he missed the part where Napoleon obtained power instead of skulking in shadows. I think that his basic problem with his concept of extraordinary individuals was that he tried to do a very ordinary murder for profit and to get away with it by hiding it, while a truly extraordinary individual would commit the deed in the open or at least as a message.
Like for example if he slaughtered the old woman and left a message written with her blood, then even though anonymous he would represent something else than just a robbery.

Overall, I have only read the beginning of the novel, not sure if I have even got to the murder as I was just sickened and disgusted by the state of that world, the common degeneracy and misery. What's the point of forcing people into such world at all?

I think that what would be much closer to the ideal of extraordinary individual are public rampage shooters who usually manifest their power openly through self-sacrifice. Like reading the diaries and manifestos of such individuals is much more interesting exploration of the subject. Since that's the way an individual can reach some degree of power.

Another great review! Hurricane Season is my favourite book of last year. Really brutal, but also an important work. I need to read Crime and Punishment and review it. There's a distinct lack of Dostoevsky on my channel, which needs to be remedied! Have a wonderful week :)

I have a question for you. Which publisher do you think is best for classics in hardcover? Where do you buy "Everyman's library" books from?

The only thing i didn't like in this book was Luzhin, he's actually just a "thing".

Crime and Punishment is good but the Magnum opus is obviously The Brothers Karamazov. Would like to see your review .

Hey! So after this video I did actually tried to pick up Crime and Punishment but for some reason I couldn't bring myself to it.
I know this because I'm a veritable fan of Haruki Murakami's writing, and through his writing, I've picked up a more in depth sense of what us, humans are really capable of in terms of making a morally uncorrupt decision or conjuring up an opinion about something of the same nature.
As a result, I think the duality of a person's actions or in fact, the person himself has become somewhat fluid to me you know; pretty much like each to his own. So, as of now I find it somewhat tiredsome to read philosophical proses at large.
If you think about it leisurely, you can't ever know what is right or wrong unless you know the opposite. To some extent.

И тут я осознал, что читал у Достоевского полностью только повесть «Кроткая»

In all brutal honesty-and the provision of rambling these platforms bestow to scoundrels like me- I would like to say that I simply miss Ayesha.

Hello Amreen, hope you are doing well,
I do enjoy Your videos, and the way you present the topic of the book,
I hope someday you read 'In Search Of Lost Time' By Marcel Proust.
Would love to hear Your thoughts on it,

So much philosophy and chatter but nothing practical, if we leave aside the concepts and words of others all that happened is that a poor and emotionally unstable young man kills a rich old woman and then based on religious conditioning he feels guilty
