Stellar S-14: Ultra Light Touring Kayak

I was super excited to finally get to see the newest S-14 in person. This kayak has had a cult following for some time as one of the best sub 40lbs light touring kayaks on the market. After giving this kayak a detail once over, its not hard to see why. There is lots to like about this kayak for a progressing paddler. Large yet supportive cockpit, smart contact points, crazy light weight, and not overly priced for the quality of construction. I look forward to testing this one out and comparing it to some of the other light kayaks in this catigory.

One other neat thing with Stellar kayaks is the ability to move the seat pan forward as well. Really helpful to dial the fit in just right.

A skeg AND a rudder...interesting choice. Nice looking boat. Same length as my Delta 14 and Eddyline Sitka, but lighter.

Portland Kayak is one of the BEST shops there is. Friendly staff and great selection.

This is a fabulous boat and a huge improvement over the previous S14. It tracks better (with the skeg down) although skeg up it won't stay straight to save your life like its predecessor. It is VERY fast like >6mph going straight, also very light and easy to carry. Like all Stellar boats the seat is terrible but you slightly get used to it. I find that any boat that is meaningfully more stable is far slower, but any boat that is a bit faster like the S16 it is also a lot easier to flip. This is a nice sweet spot between stability and speed that is far more forgiving. It handles pretty well in wind and waves. I recommend trying it.

I would love to see you review the Seastream Openwater kayak. I can’t find any reviews on it and I’m super interested in buying that one.
Love your videos. Keep at it brother.

Dan - I'm a strong paddler. I am looking for a lightweight 14' boat. I own a 16' 6" Fathom but want something a little shorter for rivers and quick turns. I'll be in a river race next April. I need to hit a paddle speed of 5 mph. I am thinking of the Stellar composite multi-sport 14. Any thoughts? I am competitive... need to win. Best paddle? High angle suggestions?

S-14 is a "High Volume"? I thought the high volume is the 14-HV, right? Perhaps things were labeled differently 2 years ago?

Good stuff would love an on the water review if that model. How do you think it would compare to a Sitka in terms of speed stability durability and playfulness ?
