Are you wondering how to stand out and catch the hiring manager’s eye? The answer is — soft skills!

Soft skills are personality traits and behaviors that will help candidates get hired and succeed in their work. Unlike technical skills or “hard” skills, soft skills are interpersonal and behavioral skills that help you work well with other people and develop your career.

What are soft skills?
Soft skills are abilities that relate to how you work and how you interact with other people. Popular soft skills include communication, teamwork and other interpersonal skills. Employers look for soft skills in candidates because these skills are hard to teach and are important for long-term success. Soft skills are different from hard skills, which are technical and job-specific.

The essential soft skills that every employer values in 2021 are:

1. Communication — communicating your ideas, active listening, and drawing logical conclusions from the information given is a valuable trait employers look for. Good communication leaves no room for misunderstandings.
2. Organization — managing your tasks and delegating work if necessary is essential for high productivity. Being good at organization affects both you and the people who work with you.
3. Emotional Intelligence — objectively making decisions and removing yourself from your emotions as well as correctly identifying the emotions of others and acting accordingly improves communication and collaboration.
4. Decision Making — just making decisions isn’t enough. You have to analyze the situation, get all the necessary information, identify a problem, and come up with potential solutions. Assessing each solution and then picking the right one is vital.
5. Critical Thinking — when you have no previous experience with a specific problem, you have to think about it critically and even think outside of the box in order to come up with a solution. That’s what hiring managers look for.
6. Analytical and Quantitative Skills — gathering, analyzing, and implementing large amounts of information without getting overwhelmed is an amazing trait to have and one that hiring managers appreciate regardless of the job position.
7. Teamwork — being a team player is key to productive work. That’s especially true if your job position requires a lot of interpersonal and inter-team collaboration.
8. Positive Attitude — having an eagerness to get the job done, a sense of humor, and self-motivation are important.
9. Problem Solving — every working day will have unique problems that you have to quickly and efficiently solve.

Other soft skills that every candidate should have in order to get hired are:
● Creativity
● Work Ethic
● Interpersonal Skills
● Time Management
● Leadership
● Attention to Detail
● Computer Skills
● Performing Under Pressure
● Social Skills

୧⍢⃝୨ How well do you communicate? Communication skills are important in almost every job. You will likely need to communicate with people on the job, whether they are clients, customers, colleagues, employers, or vendors. You will also need to be able to speak clearly and politely with people in person, by phone, and in writing.

Soft skills are different from hard skills (also known as technical skills), which are directly relevant to the job to which you are applying. These are often more quantifiable, and easier to learn than soft skills. A hard skill for a carpenter, for example, might be the ability to operate a power saw or use framing squares. A soft skill would be the ability of the carpenter to communicate effectively with coworkers and clients.
