It be nice if there was a quest for this where the father recognizes you're the Thane of Whiterun and asks you teach his son how to fight so he can see if he's truly fit for the role of dragon slayer. Then you get take his son to raid three bandit camps and if the son goes down during the fight he has a change of heart, if he doesn't then he feels even more motivated to become a dragon slayer where the quests assigns you to fight a dragon with him then from there he realizes how dangerous a dragon is and he's probably better off being a Guardsman or Thane.

I agree with Skulvar here. Dragons are not only NOT big lizards, they're extremely intelligent, immortal, and terrifying powerful. For crying outloud, the Dovahkiin is a demi god, and even he gets bodied by those fuckers sometimes.

Skulvar has a point, his son should keep to the trade, maybe just until the dragons are dealt with. Still, he could've explained and phrased this better and more kindly.

Most people in these comments are projecting their experience as the Dragonborn onto the guy and assuming he'd go at it alone like the Dragonborn does. He's almost certainly talking about joining up with a group to hunt them. It's still not wise given what we know as players, but in universe it's completely reasonable for a random citizen who's never even seen a dragon before to think that you and a dozen of your buddies with steel armor could take on a random dragon.
