I've seen engineers not add any machine generated reverb but instead with a band playing together in a small room just leave the studio door open by an inch and mic up the edge of the door and blend that to the mix. He said he does it on every session and sounds great.

I have been practising just that - my goto general reverb is UAD Ocean Way Studios. Sounds really organic and lush!
