I had a idea for a stool to go in a coffee shop that you can pedal and charge your phone, have a chat, and get some excersise all at the same time. I did test on a NEMA stepper motor as a generator, and it produced plenty of power with a simple belt drive gear.

Just an idea Robert, would it not be a good idea to have some flywheel to this contraption? Then one just have to pedal it up and concentrate on the work for a while and could keep a steady hand if tinkering with fine mechanical jobs for instance?
The stray energy left in the flywheel when jobs done could be sourced into a battery-pack for a small light later on, if not used, hey the more you get if you charge more of those small 3, 7 Lipos or NiMh or use it for a light on the workspace? Voila!... Just a though or two. Hope they could be of use. :)

Would love to see one of the last 4 projects( 2 VAWG, 2 vehicles) finished, I really liked those and they were. so well made that I was looking forward to seeing them completed( as I’m sure many other were). Now I can’t allow myself to get excited as I don’t know if you will do the same again and leave it half finished.

"PTO", power take off. On a tractor or truck, they often have PTOs to run winches etc. This is a PTO to run drills etc. The real challenge will be to adapt other things to fit the PTO.
That's really a major advantage to electricity, it easily delivers power to a variety of standardized machines. Also it equalizes power inputs. I envisioned a bicycle train where each PTO fit into the PTO of the next bike, but when I realized that each bike would be supplying a varying amount of power, I thought to use generators that charge batteries run motors at equal speeds.

Hi,
I have been playing along the same lines, however to generate electricity which can then be used to power anything.
I started with an old gym exercise bike which had a belt driven wheel, added a fly wheel to maintain momentum, converted a starter motor to a generator and it worked but poorly. So have been working to increase its efficiency, trying alternators, drill motors (multiple) etc.
By far the best efficiency comes from mass ie more fly wheels and better bearings. Also the best output was gained by breaking up a worn out petrol generator but the re-engineering was a lady dog.

Brilliant as always man. My thought is why not both? Power generation and mechanical work. Say permanently attach a generator and make attachments that swiss army to the crank. Hybrid dat lol

Just wondering how often you take parts from previous projects to reuse in current projects. If not you must be running out of storage, lol.

Very good, a generator seems the best thing in the darkest Africa here the " French" turnboff the power a lot
Won't it be better to just strap a working bike onto a dyna type electricity Genny?

For most applications a fly-wheel would help, it may need a brake though.

Hi mate do you think you'd be able to make an high powered dynamo for a bike from a car alternator? I've looked at a few things but the have the bike motionless but if this could be done would a bike charge it's self ???

1) There are other ways to harness our leg power than pedals. Some might be more efficient in transforming leg muscle energy into rotary motion. Please look for them. 2) This idea reminds me of water powered mills. The kind of pedal powered applications you create for the "pedalpod", (er, dynapod 8-)) might well be adapted to other low power, power sources. One such is the old animal powered system where 4 footed animals plod around in a circle on a big turntable.
