the fact that they made this song in 1977 blows my mind

Ya'll gotta realize that this was the real deal. Wire has to be THE most influential band that no one {outside of musicians and their ilk} has ever heard of. Pink Flag is prob the definite punk thing. Yet without 154, no Ministry et al. Wire has for ages been as tho what we now think of as Anonymous. Think bout it.

Bought the album in 1977, it stayed on the t/table for months,   sounds a lot better on vinyl than cd.

Awesome song. For awhile I could only listen to the sample back in the early 2000s. It was a pretty anxious twenty minute wait hoping this file wouldn’t break as I illegally downloaded it a few years later. Still one of my all time favourites.

I support your idea, people who listens to music just for fun will miss a lot of things from albums and songs, it is music, it is made to be listened, not to have it as a background noise. You dont see too much people watching a good movie while doing something else, or using a painting as a table. Its ok to have music as a background filler, but know that to fully get the music, you must pay full atention. sorry for my english

I can see how this inspired Kevin Shields.

Dead or aloive. What a sound, punk minimalism at its best.

I was sold up the river to the red slave trade
The stores were gathered, the plans were laid
Synchronised watches at 18:05
How many dead or alive
In ninteen fifty-five?
The pink flags was screaming
Bugle boys sucked and blew
No time for expression, orders given
Books were cooked, on the fourth or the third
How many seen or heard
On the twelfth of the third?
How many dead or alive? (how many)

@WorldOpener you're right... ;) the point is: how is it possible nobody, from the general public, knows this fantastic band?

the DIY culture of the punk scene sort of smashes your theory apart

perhaps my favorite release of all time- never gained proper respect in USA- too bad 'cause this was epic!

i never said it shouldn't be fun, but to consider art only as a source of fun is a limitating view, of course people listen music to enjoy it, I do it to, but enjoyment is not a synonym of fun. And not taking art seriously? serious doesn't mean boring or dull, it means that you put all your heart and soul into making it and not letting things like selling more records make you decide how your music should be, i make music and i take it seriously because is my work, and i love it, i bet wire does

Such a great band. If you wanna hear modern music that's different try an album called Medicate the Howls.

for the experience, that may include fun, but limiting it to only fun is sad, not every music is fun but has a different aproach, it's art not a videogame

@senaposio
Well, they've a somewhat unique style. You have to listen quite hard to notice how avant-garde they are. If you don't, they sound like pop, which bores people who think they've taste.
On the other hand, they're too complex for people who just listen music for fun.
They're caught between to stools. You could also say their chair's missing ;)
