I had no idea the history of this proverb & just found out I’ve been using it incorrectly all my 32 years of life. Lol. I’m glad I know the history now. Cool.

Once there was a farmer and his wife that went to the store downtown he told his wife to go into the grocery store and buy the groceries they needed and he wanted to go look at the town's bulletin board to see any new posted updates call me when you get done he says, so the wife goes in the grocery store and starts buying groceries that they need while he was reading the bulletin board later the wife comes and says I got all our groceries are you ready to go he says sure so they go home and while she's making dinner, they hear a knock on the door the wife opens the door and sees a man standing there with a horse. He asks her would they like to have a horse he's giving his horse away and it's free surprised by the offer a woman asks her husband to come to the door her husband looks at the man with the horse and says well let me see so he walks over to the horse opens the horse's mouth looks in the guy stands there with a surprised look on his face. So the old farmer says no I don't think I'd be wanting this horse the guy looking Disturbed and a little angry walks away with the horse. The farmer's wife starts getting and kind of angry and says to her husband why did you do that that's rude the old farmer says well I could be downright honest with you I could use a good horse but when we was down town I was looking on the bulletin board and it said that they was going to start doing animal health inspections at department of animal control anybody found with a neglected animal what's going to be fine 5000 and up yes I could use a good horse but that horse had bad teeth and if we had been caught with him we could be paying a real expensive fine imagine that's why the guy was given a horse away.
