What an honour to see this monument to Ioannis Kapodistrias in St. Petersburg. Ioannis Kapodistrias served as the first president of Greece. What's the connection with Russia? Kapodistrias served also as a diplomat for Russia. He was invited to Russia by the Tsar Alexander I. Kapodistrias, a diplomat of a rare insight and intellect ended up becoming the Head of Ministry of Foreign Affairs. What's interesting, Pushkin also worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at that time. Kapodistrias considered Russian his second motherland.
I need to read more about this man. I'll soon go to Greece and get a book about him in Greek.
This monument is very close to Ploshad' Vostanya in the centre of the city.
