Public EV Charging Corridor Shut Down Along I-95 - My Thoughts & EA's Official Response

Electrify America stations on I-95 are offline for planned upgrades, on one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. Here are my thoughts and Electrify America's official response.

Com on, it just like when your utility upgrades their HV transmission lines. They turn off all the power to hundreds of homes for several weeks so their customers are without power while they wait... they don’t do that. They run new equipment in parallel so the change is quick and painless.

I'm infuriated and I don't even use this network. This type of thing could really make a dent in EV adoption rates. It's just not justifiable barring any real security or safety issue.

You need to get the CEO of Electrify America back on the horn and make him explain this on the record. There is no excuse for this. Surely they could upgrade each charger one at a time. Even if they have to shut a whole site down you would do this by bringing in all of the equipment and staging it so that a team can come in and do the whole job in a couple of hours.

Thank God I have a Tesla. If I had a CCS or CHADeMO car and I got caught by this in would be back with V8s in a heartbeat.

No fuel company would ever do this with gas stations, what would make them think this is a good idea?

If I had to take a wild guess: The people that made this decision don't drive EV. Imagine taking all the gas stations along I-95 down during a holiday weekend to change out the pumps! That is what we have here. Good job Kyle

Tesla augments their high-traffic charging locations with mobile PowerPack-based stalls on holiday weekends while Electrocute America shuts everything down. Sounds about right. Boggle.

Did you notice a lack of equipment staged near the charging stations. Why turn them off if you haven't got the replacement hardware staged ready to be installed?

I wonder if they intend to swap all their existing stations to these Signet chargers. So they only have one type of charger to troubleshoot and develop software for.

It should definitely be a staggered and more graceful rollout though.

This "upgrade" was very poorly planned. No one at all thought about staggering the upgrades so people could still travel (not to mention a holiday weekend). Though I tend to check plugshare on my trips I wouldn't have expected this kind of dumb@#@ move and likely would have been in trouble if I needed this network. Do better EA...
