Your employer does not need to know your personal life.

This is good advice in all aspects of life, not only job interviews. 👍

I feel like we have all made the mistake of over sharing. Its one I plan not to make again.

During my last interview they kept trying to get more personal information out of me. Kept insinuating I have kids.

When they ask you to introduce yourself or tell them more about yourself, it's better to give background information that connects you to and makes you great for the role. Give examples of things you loved or did in that context so it builds some bond and sense of familiarity but not getting too personal.

If you think you're in, but havent signed contracts etc yet, be Very careful if invited out to lunch or dinner: you're still under surveillance and with drinks etc. maybe let your guard down, say too much ... (tactics of an old HR boss I knew)

Don’t get personal even if you get the job, with the colleagues. Huge No No! It will all be used against you.

It really *is* a lot like being under arrest, only you don’t have the right to remain silent - you have to say something. It all is being used against you though…

Don't let them know you have kids, definitely don't let them know if you care for your older parents, don't let them know if you're single or not, sexual orientation, religion....literally, the weather and the specifics of the job you're interviewing for are it!

What if you're around a bunch of nosey gossips? What are some topics to keep things on a surface level, does not reveal personal information and lets coworkers feel like communicating with you is not a minefield? Would love to hear your ideas.

if i have an employment gap because my father broke his pelvis and i say that to the hiring manager, is that sharing too much info?

Sometimes the job needs a person that the employer must trust. In this case you must share your personal information. I have such job right now, so my employer hired a lie detector man to test my sincerity and look for possible flaws before the contract signature.
