I remember as a kid picked elderberries we had a 160 acre farm so we had plenty of them all over the place. THE PURPLE FINGERS

Garlic scapes are great in anything you want a light garlic flavor. Makes excellent pesto and a nice add to hummus.

The garden is looking good. Glad you were able to keep the deer away from the outer garden. We resorted to a privacy fence and they still browse my flowers.
Harvest the scapes. When they're young and really curly they're tender enough to nibble on. We slice them and add to salads and as a topping for greens or potatoes and they're good in eggs if you like them savory. Once they start to straighten up they're a little tougher and not as fun to eat raw but you can add them to a stir-fry or blitz them and they make a fantastic pesto. You and the Mrs. are such good, creative cooks you'll run out of scapes before you run out of ideas. Once they're straight up they can be tough. They can also be dehydrated, although freeze drying is best. Taking off the scapes concentrates the growing energy into the bulbs instead of wasting it on the seeds.
Here in northern Ohio the smoke was really bad yesterday. You could smell it. We had a Code Red for the air quality alert and to ask people to stop calling the fire department. We're due for rain and decent winds tomorrow so hopefully that helps. I hope your wife is OK. I have a friend with respiratory issues and she's miserable and medicated.

Ed your garden really looks great! That hard work all makes it worth while. Ya the smoke over here is real bad too. You should get ahold of Harvest right and see if they can send you a freeze dryer. I think you would be a great teacher of it and be useful for all of garden harvest. Hope you can work it out. Thanks for all your videos. God Bless! Chuck Henry.

I've heard you can use young tender Garlic Scapes like that in Stir Frys and they do well. I always pluck mine off right when I see em - The thought there is that the plant will send "energy" into the bulb/root instead of spreading it out between the bulb and the seed/flower pod/scapes. Who knows if that actually does anything but I just do it.

I live in a cooler northern part of the country and grow only hardneck garlic that's very cold tolerant. My preferred variety is "Music". A hardneck german porcelain varietal that does well in my region and produces 3-4 large cloves per head rather than 9+ small cloves. It's a good tasting garlic and we find it to be easier to peel/process in recipes. It stores pretty well too - I've still got some in my cabinet that I pulled last October and it's perfectly fine.

Thanks for braving the smoke to give us a look at your abundance!

Your garden is lovely and looks like it is going to produce great! We have had a lot of that smoke from Canada. It is even now down in TN. where my sister lives.

Your garden looks beautiful. My elderberries are also crazy huge this year like yours. I always thought we had very similar weather and precipitation but I guess not this year. I am in zone 5a here. (It must be the elevation difference.) And it has been a recent deluge of rain here in the past week. The weeds have exploded and I can't get outside to work in the filthy, polluted, toxic air. it has been dropping to the 50's every night and it is crazy to have to keep everything closed up and run the a/c -- but if you stay outside for more then 10 minutes it will burn the eyes and throat and cause chest congestion and coughing. All my heat-loving plants are just sulking. The extreme temps don't help. Nights have stayed very cold all spring and now into summer. I feel for the poor farmers who are suffering and hemorrhaging money from crop losses. I hope Mrs. URHC is not suffering too much.

Everything looks gorgeous! Holy elderberry! Lol. You shouldn't get many colds this winter, ha! Crazy how you can tell how high the deer can reach your trees. Gizmo's not very old is it? Be safe with the smokey air. Take care.

We have the smoke down here about 10 miles north of Corning. It was worse a couple weeks ago.

Ed, your garden is looking wonderful. It's amazing to see the difference in climate and growth from our area in GA to your area in NY. Stuff you are just getting started with, we are pulling out because it has run it's course already. What zone are you? We are 8A.

Instead of dust, use Permethrin SFR. It’s good for every bug. But use with caution it will kill bees too if you use it. I use it on Lillie’s but cover the buds/blooms/ top 8” of the lilly leafs with a container and spray them for the aphids that are a pain. I never see bees land on the leaves. I have Honey bees so I’m cautious.
