“Labour Are Painting Sunak As Out Of Touch” | Sir Keir Starmer Delivers First Election Speech

Sir Keir Starmer has promised to “fight for you” and show that Labour is ready to lead.
In a speech in West Sussex, Starmer talked about Labour’s focus on “economic security, border security, and national security.” He spoke to undecided voters, saying, “Yes, you can trust us. I’ve changed this party.”
He shared a story from Wolverhampton about a couple who had to cancel plans for a second child and a new home because of the mortgage crisis after Liz Truss’s mini-budget. He promised, “A Labour government won’t let that happen to working people.”
He slammed the Conservatives for losing “control of the economy” and making people “pay the price.” He dismissed Rishi Sunak’s claims of economic recovery as “disrespectful,” noting that taxes are the highest since World War II.
Starmer mocked Sunak’s plan to bring back National Service as a “teenage Dad’s Army,” calling it a desperate move. He highlighted the choice in the election: “Levelling up with Labour or more chaos with the Tories.”
He further slammed Sunak’s leadership, saying the Rwanda policy is a failure and that “Sunak knew it wouldn’t work but was too weak to oppose it.”
On international issues, Starmer urged Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to “stop” the offensive in western Rafah, calling the scenes “horrifying.”
Starmer said the election would focus on the “cost of living and the NHS,” accusing the Tories of giving up on levelling up. He also dismissed claims he is “too tired” for the campaign, saying he is fully capable at 61, compared to the 44-year-old Sunak.
Peter Cardwell speaks with the former advisor to Sir Tony Blair, John McTernan.
