In this video, I'll show you the build of a 4x4x4 RGB LED cube. An ATtiny85 microcontroller was used to actuate the RGB LED's. Shift-registers were used as a way to increase amount of IO's. Transistor-arrays were used for load switching.

I appreciate you explaining the theory so well. I'm working on making a common anode display in the shape of a trapezoidal prism, so the theory is important for me to accurately translate the necessary concepts. I'd love to take a look at the code you used, haven't done much coding before so that part is going to be fun to bang my head on for a while.

I like the video, and the project, but it shows how much electronics you need to drive these RGB LEDs.
And this is a smaller cube, a 4x4x4.
This is why I have decided to go with individually addressable RGB LEDs (ws2812 or equivalent).
All they need is 5 volts, and a single signal input wire, which just then goes out of the LED to the next one's input.
You can then use a publicly available library, e.g. FastLed, to drive your LEDs.
