How we animated SpongeBob?

In our video about SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, you’ll get an exclusive look at how we brought SpongeBob and his underwater world to life. We used a specially designed rig that allowed us to animate every part of SpongeBob independently, giving him a unique and lively presence on screen.

Our team, including Jacques Daigle, Animation Supervisor at Mikros Animation, carefully balanced traditional animation techniques with modern technology to enhance SpongeBob’s iconic look. We used hand-painted brush strokes to add a 2D animation effect and relied on sketches and storyboards for reference to keep the animation consistent with the show.

Jacques Daigle, along with Guillaume Dufief, Adrien Montero, and Liam Hill, were instrumental in this process. Their exceptional work earned us a nomination for Outstanding Animated Character in an Animated Feature at the 2021 VES Awards, placing us among the industry’s finest.

I know a lot of people had a lot of different problems with this movie, but one thing nearly everyone can agree on is that the animation was amazing

Man, if only more 3D animated were like this!

I like it when 3D animation has a style, instead of it feeling realistic or trying to appeal to babies!

Like Imagine if we had a 3D movie, that tried mimicking the 50s UPA style, that'd be dope!
The closest we ever got was 2004's "The Incredibles" tho it's mostly just the character designs and not really the movement itself

Edit: Well now since Blender made some amazing updates, i have a feeling that indie animators will revolutionize 3D animation forever!

It’s a shame the writing for this movie was a load of barnacles because y’all cooked with the visuals

The final product turned out really divisive (mostly over the story) but I’ve always LOOOVVED how this movie looked visually. It’s my absolute favorite 3d interpretation of SpongeBob. It’s so beautiful looking and I’ve always wondered if there was any inspiration from the spongebob video game Battle for Bikini Bottom. It seems to take similar design elements and colors from that era of 3d Spongebob.
