Thank you for explaining this strange method. My son's teacher requires he uses this method, though I don't like it. I prefer the traditional method I learned in the 90s.

I like this way. I think area models are very important because it really helps out with distributed property, especially when the students get older. However, this is definitely not third grade.

I understand the reasoning for some of the math methods but I don't get how this helps students grasp what is going on with the numbers. Also, where do they learn about tenths making a whole?
