Turkey Earthquake: Hope and despair as rescuers search for survivors in Antakya

Here is what we saw in Antakya, Hatay province, the region hit hardest by the worst earthquake in Turkey in nearly a century.

It looks like some of the newer buildings were engineered to withstand the quake. I wonder if there have been stronger building codes since the last big quake in 1999? I would like to see accurate info about if/how successful the government has been in preparing for the next quake... Were most of the building that came down built before 1999? How many building built AFTER 1999 fell? Why? What has happened to the billions of dollars (I hear...) in tax money collected, post 1999, to help future disasters like this. So many questions....

No human being on earth can be sufficiently prepared for this. I think those saying the response is too slow are so grief-stricken, traumatised, and angry, they’re lashing out ❤ The level of destruction must be unbelievable, it’s going to take a long time to handle.
