I've airbrushed quite a bit but this was a v good video for beginners, a lot of people don't realize how much equipment and work and space airbrushing takes up, and don't consider all the safety aspects either. Thanks for covering this!

I always appreciate your insights on budget friendly options! For some reason I never even think to check if I can make my own paint thinner, I just assume it’s something I have to buy. Thanks for the great reminder that there are other ways to go about it!

Great video! Suggestions for improved airbrushing experience.

* releasing air and paint. Press down to turn on your air THEN pull back to spray paint. The farther back you pull, the more paint you spray. So a tiny pull, right up close to your work, gives you a thin line. Pull all the way to spray a lot of paint.

* letting go the trigger. Move the trigger forward all the way THEN release to shut off air. This will clear any paint out of your nozzle. This prevents an unwanted splat of paint when you next press the trigger and that glob of paint wont dry on your needle tip and clog your brush.

* if you see spotting or you’re not getting as much paint out of the brush, first clean your needle. Take a clean but wet, stiff paint brush and brush the needle. Best way is push straight into the needle and spin the brush. Don’t touch the needle with the ferrule of the brush, or you’re going to bend the tip, and buy a new needle. If you’re still getting clogged tips, first give the airbrush a good cleaning. Then thin your paint more the next time.

* Thinning, use water, medium or flow improver for your brand of paint. Or a good general glow improver for acrylic paints is Vallejo. Don’t use thinner, yes it will thin the paint, but it will also dry the paint faster, thus clogging your tip faster.

* cleaning your airbrush, I use Vallejo airbrush cleaner or 91%+ alcohol as well as water. What I do is
* dump the cup
* fill cup with water and spray all into an airbrush cleaning cup pulsing the water flow to expose more of the needle.
* fill half the cup with alcohol or airbrush cleaner and repeat until cup is near empty,
* pulse the last bit of thinner or alcohol into a paper towel soaking the exposed needle and swizzle with your paint brush a couple of times until spray into a clean paper towel sends no paint.

* watch the Harder & Steinbeck videos on YouTube, he gives great instruction that applies to all airbrushes not just H&S.

* have fun!

HII!!

I went through the same process a few years ago, there's always been a lack of "for a total beginner" tutorials, so it's really useful.

I will point out other things I've learned and mainly that is: You don't need to buy all the extra things, you really don't.

1 Paint thinner, paint retarder, totally unnecessary with the modern acryllic paints we generally use. Use water to thin them to the right consistency to spray, and that's literally all you need, WATER

2 Airbrush cleaner, totally overpriced, buy yourself either some IPA based glass cleaner (Usually extremely cheap) or some pure IPA and mix that with some water as you need to clean the airbrush. IPA based cleaners are considered household cleaners so are very common and usually cheap.

3 For PPE, I agree with using a mask. Strange thing with airbrush booths is that you still should wear a mask, so for me personally, I never bothered with the booth and just have the mask. You can get disposable dustmasks for cheap, but they often don't fit that well, so I usually recommend a slightly better mask that fits your face quite well and has replaceable filters (Like the ones you showed)

The one important early step is to properly dissassemble and reassemble the airbrush, in fact when I teach people airbrush use I teach this before we even touch the compressor or any paint.

4 learn to dissassemble clean and reassemble the paint cup, diffuser, cone, nozzle and needle at the very minimum. Often the internal linkage for the button is held in place by the needle so learn how to put that back in as it will fall out during cleaning. Eventually you may wish to learn how to dissasemble and clean the valve as over time paint can get back into this area and clog it up.

Over time, you learn various things, you mention air pressure and that's important, but dilution probably the bigger one to start with.

5 Practice teaches you how to adjust the dilution, air pressure, distance, speed you should use in any situation. None of these are fixed to 'correct' and 'wrong' but can vary depending on what you're painting and what effect you're after. The one thing that held me back for the longest when I started is the advice to mix paint to the consistency of milk, the most unhelpful and incorrect thing. Practice, experiment, test stuff, paint on big sheets of paper and tiny models, see what it can do, and what you can make it do.

I never gave air brushing a thought, and found that I was very interested. I thought the review was very, very well done. I liked how you showed the product and each part of it, and respected that you were very honest and straightforward with your experience.

I’m totally clueless about airbrushing. You did a very thorough great review! Thanks for sharing!

I didn't know that about the trigger, and that would be a nightmare on my hypermobile joints, so thank you for saving me from that unwelcome surprise.

Nice one, Miss M! "Compressor, eh? That's new fangled! Why back in my day..." Yup, we had to blow through the hose ourselves. Twice a day, whilst walking 10 miles to & from werewolf school, uphill both ways 🤨

Thanks for your thoughts and experience of getting started with the airbrush. I’ve never purchased one because I have an irrational fear of noozles 😖.

lol, I had soooo many of the same pain points with my first airbrush, and I'm still in a hate/hate relationship with mine. No mater how quickly I clean it, paint sticks to it, and it has little air gaps.

Great video, i did not consider those things

Thanks for the video. Did you by chance go to a low psi of roughly 20? It appears to me that it can only go to a low of 40 psi.

Everybody knows you should fiddle with the pressure regulator knob while working the noozle. Just basic airbrush stuff.
