While speaking on Muslim Law, Prof Tahir Mahmood highlights that the citizens of India have been provided a choice and right to opt out of their personal laws with regard to the matters concerning their marriage. In such a situation, the text of  Special Marriage Act, 1954 come into play. Further, it is to be noted that the law concerning marriage of Muslims under the customs and traditions pertaining to the Muslims are to be governed by various decisions and pronouncements of the Supreme Court  in that regard.

Prof Tahir Mahmood is an eminent professor of law. He was Prof and Dean, Faculty of Law, Delhi University and is presently Chairman Institute of Advanced Legal Studies at Amity University, Noida. The other distinguished offices held by him include Chairman, National Commission for Minorities Member NHRC and of Law Commission of India. He is also a renowned author on legal issues.
