The Climate Threat: Opportunities and Challenges in Pakistan's Agriculture

Pakistan, currently the fifth-most populous country in the world, has made significant progress in the field of agriculture. A partner of the Green Revolution in the 1960s, it is now a food surplus and net exporter country, with considerable potential in agriculture, water, and energy. At the same time, Pakistan has not realized the full potential of its agricultural productivity because of the government’s limited financial resources and inconsistent domestic policy.

Beyond all of this, Pakistan’s agricultural sector and potential will be significantly disrupted by climate change. From 2000 to 2019, Pakistan was ranked by the Global Climate Risk Index as the eighth-highest country affected by climate change. The country is vulnerable to climate disasters that could threaten thousands of lives and billions of dollars in the agricultural sector, infrastructure, and economy. There are several questions that surround Pakistan’s climate risk and agricultural sector. To what extent will climate change really impact Pakistan’s agricultural potential? What steps can be taken to adapt, mitigate, and get ready for the disruption of climate change?
