Sutra 2.3
[avidyā-asmitā-rāga-dvesha-abhiniveshāh panca- kleshāh.]
The five causes-of-affliction are [spiritual] ignorance (avidya), I-am-ness (asmitā), attraction (raga), aversion (dvesha) [and] clinging to life (abhiniveshā).
avidyā = ignorance / lack of awareness / illusion
asmitā = I-am-ness / ego
rāga = attachment / likes
dvesha = aversion / dislikes
abhiniveshā = clinging to life / fear of death
panca = five
klesha = cause-of-affliction / causes-of-pain / miseries
Sutra 2.10
[te pratiprasava-heyāh sūkshmāh.]
[In] subtle [form], these [five causes-of-affliction] are to be overcome by the ‘counterflow’.
Sutra 4.34
[purusha-artha-shūnyānām gunānām pratiprasavah kaivalyam svarūpa-pratishthā vā citi-shaktir iti.]
The ‘counterflow’ of the [primary] qualities, [which have become] empty of purpose for Spirit is [what is called] ‘aloneness’, or the power of Awareness established in [its] essence. Finis.
