You’ve hit the nail on the head. Life has become
too comfortable! I live alone and the point you make about getting out each day - walking or running
is vitally important to alleviate anxiety and improve overall health.

I agree with everything you’ve said - I grew up very, very poor in the 60’s where most people had very little and we simply moved more - we had to walk to and from school, walk to the shops, all 4 of us children had to go grocery shopping with my mother to help carry home our weekly shopping. My sister and I had to help my mother do housework, prepare food, cook, wash clothes and iron. My brothers had to do the yard work and help in the veggie garden - it wasn’t just our family, everyone did these things. Our next door neighbour had 18 children and my mother would go over there everyday to help that neighbour and often she would send myself or my sister to help our neighbour as well. My mother just passed away recently and until the last 2 weeks of her life she couldn’t sit still, she was always up and down and on her feet doing things. I’m the same, if I have to sit still for more than 30 minutes I get antsy…
My mother had a very, very sad, tough life but she never, ever got depressed, she never complained and just got on with things - and I admired this about her soooo much. I see a lot of young people are sad, depressed and suicidal and I think ‘…I wonder how depressed you’d be if you had were plunged into the lives of people like my mother… or those in war torn countries etc.,
I strongly agree with you when you say that people create so many ‘problems’ for themselves and I believe it’s because our lives are too comfortable, we’ve got things too good and too easy. I have to keep my mouth shut when I hear people complaining about ‘first world problems’… as a whole we take ourselves too seriously, are too entitled and self-absorbed…. Sometimes, I am honestly dumbfounded and very disheartened by how unbelievably lazy and self-absorbed the generations which came after me are…

I'm almost 64. Gardening, house cleaning, cooking and baking are my exercise. But gardening is the hardest.

It's all about our decisions and what we do. Discipline is about making decisions that are aligned with our intentions. Inspiration may get us started, but it's the habit that keeps us going. Habits stay with us even when we don’t have the inspiration. All of it I grabbed from the book Unveiling Your Hidden Potential

I'm doing all that!!!❤❤❤ My BMI is 20, I don't take any medication, I don't eat anything from a package. In summer I swim 1 kilometre every day and dive the whole length of the swimming pool (25m). I look after 3 horses in retirement, they are over 30, walk my dog, practice yoga and the 5 Tibetans!! By the way I'm 72.😂😂😂

The tenets of my faith (Islam) teaches this principle. The five daily prayers; getting up very early in morning to pray is difficult, but great for spiritual healing and productivity. Fasting in the month Ramadan, and 2 recommended fasting on Mondays and Thursdays as an additional boost to get us disciplined as a believer, the giving of charity, giving out of what you love can be difficult but rewarding and frees one from greed and indulgence that leads to many ills/illnesses. May Allah almighty grant us the fortitude and strength to do what’s right. Thank you Dr for a brilliant reminder!!!🎉

Such sensible advice for our modern world. I’ve had the stair rule since my mum went to hospital 10 years ago and I saw so many unwell people in their 60’s and 70’s. I also got an active room for slacking there no matter what the weather!

Thank you for this message. This is so timely! My 32 year-old daughter spent the night because she just moved, and she can't get wifi until November 4th. She was so anxious that her dad told her to come over and stop stressing. What I added to my routine was adding 30 seconds of a cold shower at the end of my warm shower. I feel invigorated.

This❤. After I Split qithmmy ex I bought a run down small farm by the coast of Norway and moved me and my four horses there. This year has been intense periods of hard physical labor in harsh conditions. And doing it step by step on my own with help of friends has done a profound change in my mentality and how I view myself and the world. Thanks for bringing this topic up❤️

Right now this is very relevant as I currently have no running water in my house and have to pull it from a well in buckets nor do I have a heating element for my water. As a result I have to bathe in cold water by taking buckets of cold water and dowsing my body after scrubbing. The same with house cleaning and dishes. This also came in handy when due to the storm we lost power for 8 days. To be honest I felt more emotionally regulated not having to depend on unnatural light and scheduling my time around daylight. I noticed Ive gotten stronger from lifting 5 gallon buckets of collected water into the house and having to eat less due to the lack of power for cooking. Even when my situation changes I will still be very mindful not to squander the things I previously had in abundance and continue to go to the extra mile. It definitely builds character.

People have become lazy and self entitled.

I am glad I was brought up at a time of struggle .

The generations today have not shared the same experience and as you wisely explain have become far too comfortable.

Moving is everything for our physical and mental health.

Great and totally spot on with everything you are saying DR. Rangan .

I've never framed it as discomfort, I walk to the shop instead of driving because I want to get my step goal. I guess my unconscious rule is "walk when possible"

Thanks for these words. I needed them. 💚 Whenever I crave sugar, I keep telling myself, no, I don't really. It's just my brain trying to trick me into eating sweet food.

I do this type of thing. I do not normally sit on a sofa and I do not eat junk food except for the rare slice of pizza. Pizza is no longer as good as it was when I was growing up in New York City in the 50's anyway. I am a slim and energetic 79 year old. I actually have not had a TV for many decades. Obviously, I do watch YouTube but I am usually doing stuff while I listen. I grow an organic garden and I make a lot of art.
