What is the pouring process in investment casting? In this video, we showcase how our experienced engineers carry out the pouring process.

Preparation for Pouring: Before the pouring begins, the foundry ensures that the ceramic molds (shells) are preheated to a specific temperature. This is crucial for preventing thermal shock when the molten metal is introduced and also helps in achieving a better flow of the metal into all intricacies of the mold.

Melting the Metal: The metal or alloy to be cast is melted in a furnace. Different metals require varying melting temperatures. The molten metal must reach a specific temperature that is high enough to ensure good fluidity but controlled to prevent any adverse effects on the metal’s properties.

Pouring Technique: The actual pouring of molten metal into the mold is a skilled task. The molten metal is ladled from the furnace and carefully poured into the preheated molds. The pouring must be performed at a controlled rate to ensure that the metal completely fills the mold cavity without forming air pockets or bubbles.

Solidification and Cooling: Once poured, the metal begins to cool and solidify within the mold. The rate of cooling can impact the properties of the final casting, including its strength and dimensional accuracy. In some cases, controlled cooling methods are applied to achieve specific material properties.

Design Considerations: The pouring process is heavily influenced by the design of the casting. Factors like the size and shape of the part, the location of the sprues and risers (channels through which the molten metal flows and gases escape), and the thickness of the walls all play a role in how the metal is poured and solidifies.

The skill and precision involved in the pouring process, along with the meticulous preparation and design of the molds, are crucial for producing high-quality, precision castings in investment casting. This step requires careful control and expertise to ensure that the final product meets the desired specifications and quality standards.
