Back in 2013, Subaru the long-time purveyor of all-wheel drive wagons and utilities, shocked us all when they unleashed the lightweight, rear-wheel drive BRZ sport coupe into this SUV-crazy world. It was like a fantastic breath of sports car nostalgia that we just couldn’t get enough of. And Subaru has only made it better since then, finally giving it an STI-like treatments. In this day and age cars like this Subaru BRZ tS, the Toyota GR 86 and the Mazda Miata are gifts to the sports car enthusiast. The fact that these sports cars have smaller, light weight engines that produce as much power as V8s in the past is not lost on me. In a world dominated by SUVs and car companies being pressured to electrify everything, these light weight, 6 speed manual pocket rockets are a breath of fresh air and I hope to own one one day. Again, great work MotorWeek.

I must be the only person that prefers Subaru/Toyota don't chase horsepower numbers. Keep it NA, simple, light-ish and relatively cheap, in the same spirit as classic sports cars or the Miata. Momentum cars are more fun than stomp the gas pedal to make up for poor cornering skills type cars.

Man I owned the first gen scion frs back when it first came out, and loved it! Man it was a fun car to enjoy driving. It wasn’t fast! But that didn’t matter to me, it was still quick enough for me, and handled like it was on rails! Boy I really miss the car now! The reason I got rid of it! Was at the time I was living in Chicago, and on the winter months I couldn’t drive it, it was to dangerous to travel to work and back home. The car didn’t have no weight, so every time I would shift a gear, I would end up sliding sideways and around in a circle! I almost killed my self in one of the occasions! And working one hour away was difficult for me to miss days from work! So I ended up trading it for a Jeep Wrangler after 2 years of ownership. And now that I’m retired and living it Arizona, I wish I have it here! So I love what Toyota and Subaru are doing with both of this car’s. Keeping it fun and somewhat affordable to buy!

Love that John Davis is still at it. I remember watching his reviews of the new 92 Viper, the Typhoon, the 93 Cobra R, etc… Saturday morning eating breakfast while watching some Motorweek (and Scooby Doo) is still the best 😂

Really glad these cars exist and am looking forward to seeing where the manufacturer and aftermarket go from here. I currently drive an ap2 s2000 but will be looking to buy the final edition of this car a couple years from now.

The best one of these to buy is a manual, base, with a limited slip differential.. That's it.. Then after market everything you want to make it what you want on the track..

I ordered on in the Spring and am still waiting for it. It should not be long now. I have been told that I should have it next month (September). I can hardly wait!

Subaru Knocked it out of the park in the performance upgrades. Further dialing in a drivers car is a win! Should have come with a cool rear wing though and gold or silver wheels.
