Quick Look: Martin 000-18 vs 000-28 Comparison

Would definitely choose mahogany. Rosewood always sounds slightly cold to me and this was no different. Probably great for a cutting tone in a band setting, but on it's own(especially with a warmer-toned guitar right next to it for comparison), it sounds a bit hollow. Still, great instruments both.

Mahogany can make smaller body guitars perform beautifully, add weight and immediacy to the notes. The rosewood produces too much shimmer, which works better on a larger sized body, say, a dreadnought, which adds weight to the notes. So, mahogany for 000, and rosewood for dreadnought.

I own a 000-28 I bought back in 1970. Great guitar. Can't go wrong with either of these beauties.

Both sound great. I bought a 00018 because it was cheaper and back then they had only just started scalloping the braces on the 18s and not the 28s. Now they’re neck and neck and you can really hear the difference in tone woods with some good headphones on.

I like the extra bass response of Rosewood, but not at the expense of the mids. 000-18 for me!

I have a 000 28 and was thinking of getting a 000 18 but I just can’t hear any difference between the two.

Umm... they sound almost identical on youtube. I would have to hear them in person to tell the difference.

The 28 is the best for my ears. We all like different sounds. Both are extremely clean, but I like the boomier sounds of the rosewood guitars. I can ear it like night and day where others have trouble hearing the differences.

000-28 sounds very clear and articulated. I come from electric and the 000-18 has really too much bass for me

You can tell the 00018 just has more power and bass.

Rosewood is just a better tonewood, Mahogany guitars only have purpose for niche song types where the rosewood is more versatile.
