Showcasing the trailer for 'Secret Matters' by Jonas Zoltan. Full film to be released as a part of the VCA Film and Television Digital Archive Project.

Gerald Murnane, the Australian award winning writer is known as a quirky man in different ways. He never sits on an aeroplane, still writes his books with two fingers on an old typewriter, lives in a remote countryside in his “office-like” flat where he is surrounded with lots of filing cabinets. However the drawers contain files that are - sometimes - signposted in Hungarian. “Titkos dolgok” (Secret Matters) is one of them. Filmmaker Janos Zoltan has been searching for the driving force behind Gerald’s passion. His passion for the Hungarian culture and his love affair to an imagined female freedom-fighter. While the writer and the director share their “common” language, an intriguing and emotional secret world slowly unfolds.

‘Secret Matters’ was Zoltan’s graduate short film, made whilst he was studying at VCA Film and Television, which is a part of The University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Fine Arts and Music.

This film is released as part of the VCA Film and Television Digital Archive Project, a living audio-visual record of student short films that date back to 1966. The films in the collection display cultural, historical, social and aesthetic significance. They are part of a widespread research, pedagogy and engagement digital archive project aimed at preserving and showcasing this important part of our Australian moving image history.

Digitiser: VCA Film and Television.
