Aftertouch Assignments and Modulation Explained - Creating Tracks

This quick tutorial explains what Aftertouch is, how to assign it to various parameters and how to modulate those parameters.

Aftertouch is one of my favorite types of modulation controllers and it's often overlooked by many people! It's a modulation source that is found in many popular synths and can also be found in the piano roll/MIDI editor in most modern DAWs, too. This is a very dynamic and highly responsive type of modulation controller that is all about attention to detail and human touch.

Aftertouch can be described as pressure sensitivity that is measured across a total of 127 increments, which is the same number of increments that MIDI is measured in. This makes it very easy-to-use and intuitive modulation source for those accustomed to working in digital environments. Most MIDI controllers (keyboards, Maschine, Push, etc) have aftertouch capabilities these days and it's as simple as varying the pressure you apply to a sustained note to control it in real-time.

Aftertouch can be used in countless ways to control many types of modulation and can even be combined with other modulation controllers/sources to create deeper and more complex modulation schemes. But you can also tap into the power of aftertouch through simple automation curves inside of your favorite DAW. So hardware is by no means a requirement to use aftertouch in your projects!

great! I was wondering why the knob didn't show the yellow semi-circle after dragging the AT marker, and it was that I need to drag and drop inside the square I drop the macro to change the range, after that my afer touhc in KK S49 worked :D
