I find that f/7-f/11 gives you enough depth of field but while making it easier to get more of the flower in focus
Sometimes less than f/7 aperture causes the photo to be less interesting cause you're isolating one part of the subject from the rest.
Naturally, we like to explore the image and see the entire flower and its imperfections.
As a bonus, a narrower aperture allows you to capture an unexpected insect with ease.
I also find that a high shutter speed helps immensely for flowers moving in the breeze. 1/640 seems to be best.
A camera with good ISO performance is helpful.

I'm surprised you didn't say anything about shutter speed considering that the video shows some of the flowers moving around in the wind.

Good information. I enjoy shooting flowers too. I shoot with 4/3rds cameras and bring a mix of lenses such as a standard zoom, mid telezoom and a macro lens. I employ flash (built in or off- camera) and a small reflector from time to time. And for me a tripod is essential gear; my hands aren't that steady these days.

I saw footage of Robin Wong waving his Olympus around, macro lens on the front, and a flash in the other hand. Worked pretty well.

He's an Olympus Visionary, in Malaysia.

Great tips! I use a Sigma 18-35 with speed-booster on a GH5. I would love to get a macro-lens. It works with a 35mm but it wouldn't hurt to get closer and get the BG more blurry. I have one question: 0:52 why do you have to turn off stabilisation when using a tripod? Do you have to do it with the camera-body as well? 2:20 great trick for a black background. That way you can use the picture and remove the black in post and get a PNG (kind of like masking) very easy. And you can get many different cool colors by just holding a paper behing the flower. Maybe a picture or a lot of colors and when it's out of focus, it might seem like Bokeh :-)

Great tips! Any suggestions on how to achieve a pitch black background? I don't have an off-camera flash and my camera limits shutter speed to 1/160 when using the built-in fill flash.

I noticed your apertures were set from f-10 to f-18. I thought lower f stops were better for creating blur in flower shooting. Thanks!

Hi! I saw your picture of the yellow flower against black background and was amazed by how crisp it was. Is there any way to replicate that with a lower resolution camera/lens

What about the wind? Will better, professional cameras capture the flowers without it being blurry? What is the most affordable camera to get for this or outdoor photography? I 'v been using an Android Galaxy S10+ phone.

What is the best time in the day or weather to take photos outdoors? When it's sunny, I get glare and can't see what I am capturing on the screen and can't see if it is out of focus or the composition is what I want.
I want photo references for watercoloring and embroidery.
