⌖ WAIT.. REALLY? RIP MAPLESTORY 2! Nexon Announces Shut Down!

⌖ Yup, you read that correctly. No, it isn't clickbait, an overexaggeration or anything other than an official confirmation of MapleStory 2 shutting down.
On March 18th Nexon made an official blog post on their website titled "MapleStory 2 Service Closure on May 27th, 2020."
The blog went on to mention how deeply saddened the team is that they're forced to shut down the global MapleStory 2 service in just 2 months.
You might be curious why they're closing the game down, though, right? Of course you are. The game hasn't even been out for long enough to warrant a shut down.

The social aspect of the game at launch was amazing with all the mini games, concerts, etc, i really loved it, but it had major problems with the endgame. Yes they did tried to fix it with Project New Leaf (and they actually fixed some things ) but it was already too late and ppl were already leaving.

The game was amazing when it came out. Spent 100 hours doing music in the game. Sadly it didn't have enough content so me and my friends moved on and never came back :/

I saw it coming. The game had its charm to it but the endgame, if you could call it that, felt more like a dodge simulator than an actual MMORPG. They could keep the engine & just recreate the original core game. That would work well for them.

I've played the game from early access to December 2019 and it feels bad. 2019 has been a rough year for the game as well, as all the players who left at early stages have never come back to the game. Most people left the game within the first 2 months, especially as soon as Nexon released end-game raids. Players noticed soon enough that gearing up was a grind+rng fiesta and actually required a lot of chores and repetitive dungeons to run on a weekly basis on several characters. People started to be elitist in dungeon finder by not letting certain classes or poorly geared people (even alts) in and the initian magic suddenly vanished.
Too little came too late with Project New Leaf, which polished some RNG aspects when most of the player base was had already been burnt out. Aside from fixed RNG, the game became even more focused on repetitive chores (WOW! Now you can do dungeons alone!) you can basically do while watching a movie or whatever. Nexon tried to release some kind of PvP on an already dead/tired population and the hype lasted for less than a week.
Anyhow, it was clear since the very beginning that the major flaw was the game design, rather than the (end game) content itself. Most (Korean) MMOs are built around endless grind, but in MS2's case you could grind for weeks and get NOTHING at all out of your time spent. I just want to give Nexon a praise for keeping the game F2P without P2W (even though I'm not a fan of gacha outfits) unlike its Korean counterpart.
This failure should serve as a reminder that you should NEVER make your game unrewarding: MMO players are willing so sink their time into a game, but they want something back. We are no longer 14 years old with infinite time in our hands.

Endgame was a rng based grind where the game would force u to spend weeks/months because you could only run a dungeon and raid a certain amount of times every week. Combo the dungeon cap with rng and u have a reason to just stop playing.

Damn.. They're shutting it down on my birthday, that's depressing.

"I never made it to endgame"

I feel like this was a fun game, but I had the same problem. I hit 10 hours and just moved on...

This game was really fun back when it first came out and i think the social aspect of MS2 was its best feature but honestly the reason this game died so fast was the endgame. The devs refused to actually fix the two biggest complaints that people had: RNG and raid/dungeon limits. Even with Project Newleaf it still made the game feel like a chore.

Developers need to first and foremost make...the...game...fun. From start to finish the game needs to grab you and not let go. I will continue to reference Final Fantasy 11. It's took me over 9 months to get my first job to 75 (the level cap) and I loved every minute of it. I was truly addicted and MMO's the days fail to capture that.

I honestly can't say I'm surprised. People were saying this game would be outclassing games like Elsword but then it just drifted off harshly and everyone forgot about it

I made it to end game, when chaos dungeons came out. To complete those, you had to be in the top guilds AND be close to the top players to be invited on a run. They were essentially gate keeping, and even charging their OWN GUILD members to partcipate in runs. If you were a girl or close to the top few you were allow in for free. Shit game with shit people but i guess thats how the real world is ? either get lucky on rolls or be know the top few people.

I played this for like a week and just never really got into it. Some of my friends enjoyed it but again none of us stuck with it. Something just didn't click with that game.

We're all Maplers here. MS1 is a core part of how we all grew up. It holds a special never ending place in our hearts. So likewise, when MS2 came out we all jumped on wishing to experience that nostalgia all over again in a new generation. But here we are today... we've been betrayed. Our trust and hopes put on paper, crumbled, then squeezed until every drop of currency fell out of us.

Nexon has been building small projects a lot over the years and "setting the sun on them" shortly after. I came into MS2 after having had my favorite FPS from Nexon "Ghost in the Shell" closed down. So I was more than suspicious of what was really going on here.

Regardless of my suspicions I did give them the benefit of the doubt by bringing in my own gaming community of over 150 players into MS2. But due to their early RNG flops the elitist community that was forming within MS2 started quickly splitting between those who are lucky and those who are not and loosing any form of friendship between one another all for the sake of "progress". Sure enough the burn caught up to everyone a lot quicker than Nexon could fix that system and bring in progressional rewards and guarantees. By then the communities were all crumbled, majority of backers and content creators gone, and everyone's dreams quickly being crushed.

I don't want to say "called it" because I really sincerely wanted MS2 to work out and last forever. But in the age we are in now, and the business models that companies like Nexon follow, are just not up to par with how we gamers would like them to be. I've seen too many great games line this get crushed and tossed aside. So all this is doing to us Maplers is continuingly increasing our distrust and hate towards Nexon.

I have a message to all my fellow Maplers: Keep those happy memories, think only about them. Companies like Nexon are not going to do any better or change regardless of your own involvement in the matter. Keep any friendships you've attained and shared and move forward, because you know by now that they will not. God bless you all my fellow Maplers!

That was cool when it came out. I remember that I could barely load some areas because of so many players. My old PC was so shit. lol The sad part is that a few weeks later it became a desert. Not completely empty but you noticed that a lot of players quit. RIP MS2.

It was a good game, even though I never made it to end game either :( I'm genuinely upset about this. This game was so different compared to other MMO's. I loved the ability it gave players to make custom-made cosmetics! Design your own clothes like in Animal Crossing! Not many games let you do that!

I am a long term player, been playing since launch and we saw the huge fall in players when the new chaos raids was introduced, and there was an uproar about weekly dungeon limits. many people would play for two days, and then not have anything else to do.
As soon as they refused to remove dungeon limits a big portion of the players stopped playing.

the need to keep the mmo like the Korean version pretty much was the downfall of it. no one really likes dungeon limits for things that are stuck behind RNG.
but at the same time it probably wasn't as simple as just removing them, so i understand. i think next time any mmo is released they need to look at MS2 and realise that dungeon limits stuck behind weapon enchanting RNG is not something that the western audience wants. and will ultimately shut their game down.

I think the most annoying thing is, that the most recent update (Kiritas update) was actually really good, and probably the best update so far. i still found myself wanting to play the game in between reset times and still having things to do. it was fun. it's just such a shame it took the game as long as it did to reach that stage, and in all honesty i think if the game launched with all the content that is now in the game it would of done a ton better. it was released with too little content.
it's such a shame the game is getting shut down right as it was starting to improve.
