What’s The Best Iron Filter

If you are reading this article then you probably have iron in your water and it is causing odor and staining your sinks, showers and if you use this same water for irrigation then it will certainly stain the walls of your house. Having iron stains is one of the most undesirable things to have on your home not to mention the rotten egg like odor caused from the Iron Bacteria. I have battled iron problems before and I am going to tell you how to get rid of iron in my water. How do you get rid of Iron Bacteria, A good indication of Iron Bacteria is the staining on your sinks and showers as well as the outside of your home. Another indication of iron bacteria is the terrible rotten egg like odor and the metallic like taste in the water. You will need an Iron Filter and one household item. Here are some steps necessary to take in order to remove the bacteria.

2. On the top of your well head you will see a little blue or black plastic nut looking object, you'll need to remove this and using a funnel pour bleach into the well, you can use a 1/2 gallon of liquid bleach or more if you like but keep in mind that the more you use the longer it will take to get out of the water. I usually use 1/2 gallon. (make sure the bleach is standard bleach, not concentrate or any other type with odor etc.

3. Once you have put in the liquid bleach you will need to get your hose and flush water into the same hole in order to wash the bleach off your pipes and it will also help stir up the bleach in the well. Once you smell bleach coming from the hose you can turn it off and move to the next step.

4. Go into the house and turn on all the faucets until you smell bleach coming from them, to include the hot water and the shower heads and outside faucet. Every faucet in the home and or on the farm, all of them.

5. Now you can let it set for about an hour or so and this will kill all the Iron Bacteria in the lines and the well. While you are letting the water sit in the well and the lines this is the best time to install your new Iron Filter

6. Once you have completed step 5 you can run your water until you have no more bleach in the water lines.

The Best Iron Filter
The best iron filter is the one I have listed below. It has a Fleck 2510 valve and when the water comes into the filter it hits a little basket in the top portion of the tank and that water then splashes inside the tank and the iron is oxidized and it becomes a solid and is caught in the medium inside the tank. When it is back washed out the tank draws another air bubble in and the process is repeated. I have used this system on every home I put Iron Filters in and it always works. I also do the above process each and every time I install a new system. I have seen other iron filters out there and this one is what I have in my home and is the only one I recommend hands down. The important thing to remember with all of this is that the PH of the water must be higher than 6.5 in order for the system to work.

1st use a spindown filter to remove sediment. The PH must be corrected. Only then can iron be removed. water softeners come last in the process. Just went through this, with 10ppm of iron

Dude, I just read through the thread. You’re awesome. You must be from the Midwest. You’re very helpful and it is much appreciated. How did you learn so much about water treatment? Do you teach it to others?. I run a plumbing business in Colorado and have been wanting to broaden mine and my employees knowledge on the subject but can’t find good training. Would this be something you’re interested in helping out with?

Katalox media has a PH operating range of 5.8-10.5... plus you can filter iron and sulfer simultaneous and it works great with the AIO heads.

Great info, just ordered an iron (heavy metal filter) , we have a slightly high arsenic level with high iron in our well water and found out that arsenic attaches to the iron and by removing the iron it should also remove the arsenic (hopefully)

We are on a well and the following water testing came back (see below). I was quoted an exorbitant price for the install for an iron breaker and a softener.

HARDNESS: 12 GPG (GRAINS PER GALLONS)
TDS: 423 PPM (PARTS PER MILLION)
IRON: 3 mg/L
PH: 7

Would you recommend the iron filter that you have linked at the bottom plus a 48, 000 grain softener? Thanks so much for your time. This video is awesome.

Awesome video. We are moving to a new home in a couple of months and I am trying to learn everything I can about water filters because our water has it all. Where do we start? Hardness level 7, tannins in the water, iron 2.0mg/L, sulphur detected, PH 7.8, T.D.S. 2000 ppm. I will need to tackle this one step at a time, so I guess I start by installing a water softener?

Very interested in this system and understand what you are saying about disinfecting the water lines in the house. I have a water softener that all water in the house comes thru. Is it ok to do this or will it ruin the resin in the water softener.

Is this a good system to use with a well. I have hard water (23g), a lot of iron that is leaving a lot of staining and the rotten egg smell? I appreciate all the good information.

Great video! Just what I was looking for. Thank you.
Couple questions:
What do you think of the fleck ironpro2. It’s a combo iron filter and Sofner?
And what if the ph is too low? How to fix that?

Good info. If your well PH is acidic should you place a water softener before the iron filter? Also what do you think of the big blue iron filter cartridge's? Thanks

I have this iron filter installed right after the pressure tank, followed by a Pelican and I still am having to use a Berkey filter to get decent water. The Berkey candles are covered in light tan sludge and have to be cleaned often. Do you have any advice? Also our water turns everything it touches with a white film on them, glasses, faucets etc, I have photos if there is any way to get them to you.

Hi Thank you for sharing you experiences with us ! I have fairly heavy Manganese 0.731 mgl and a bit of iron 0.188 mgl I have A clack AIO filox filter for about a year now it became fouled with the manganese I'm assuming. I have been struggling with it ! It has been loosing its air pocket after regen! The air pocket appears to get created on the 50 min brine draw how ever when it returns to service the pocket is next to nonexistent what would cause this pocket go away when the valve returns to service mode Getting very frustrated with this valve, I bought Clack because I is a simple design How ever I am beginning to wonder if I made the right choice! I've been searching for info on how this mysterious valve works how ever there is very little out there for info!I have as of today installed all new parts in the valve injector piston kit the only part not replaced was the brine piston as I could not find one! Same problem not sure what the issue is? Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you for sharing, What do you recommend... just had a new well put in. I have hardness of 25, iron of 5.0, TDS, 445ppm and ph of 7.2. 4 people in my home so use quite a bit of water daily. My old system was a disaster so I really need something that keeps the bath and shower white and not brown. Appreciate any help you an provide.

Is it appropriate to allow the bleach water into all types of iron filters when addressing the iron bacteria?

Also my well is 40 yr. old. Does that affect the amount of bleach you might add?
