EXTORTION 17

On August 6/2011, a CH-47D Chinook helicopter operating with the call sign Extortion 17 was shot down while transporting Quick Reaction Force attempting to reinforce a Joint Special Operations Command unit of the 75th Ranger Regiment in the Tangi Valley in Maidan Wardak Province, southwest of Kabul, Afghanistan. The resulting crash killed all 38 people on board.

1 U.S. Military Working Dog

At 31 American military personnel killed, the shoot down of Extortion 17 represents the greatest single-incident loss of American lives in Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan.

I remember when that happened. I was at FOB Shank, went out on the recovery mission. It was definitely a bad day for all. After this, they changed the name of the Night Stalker DFAC to the Hero DFAC. When we walked in through the main door down the hallway to get to the chow line, the walls on both sides were lined with pictures of these brave warriors. I'll never forget seeing all of these faces every time I would go in to eat.
