The music in the background makes me imagine this from a more melancholic perspective.
It's almost like the two of them are living in a world where they are expected to hide their emotions in general, and in this dystopian, numbed reality, the two encounter one another and are drawn by their instincts that they secretly yearn for that they've kept hidden from even themselves.

By having a connection with another, the two help each other as a pretext while continuing to deny the fact that there is more to life than their obligations to society, and one day, the yearning becomes so intense that neither of them can go on without questioning what it is that they are yearning for.

The two would then start going on dates and while on their outings, they see other couples and realise how fake everyone else is, doing what they 'expect' is what a normal couple should, rather than genuinely love each other.

This gets them to question what the two of them would have to do to radiate the energy that a genuine relationship has to over, and what that would even look like in the first place.

The two go to the movies for inspiration and notice that even the media displays relationships in this 'realistic' perspective, rather than what's ideal, so, they decide to brute force and come up with a vision all on their own.

They perform a series of tests in order to see what sort of experiences can overlap with what they consider to be a 'genuine' relationship, like hugging, giving presents, doing things that 'feel right' rather than with an intention. This of course then leads to the discovery that the difference between their relationship and other couples is the fact that they actually care about one another, and don't hold much value for themselves as a result, placing each other on a pedestal.

Wondering how this realisation can lead to more intense experiences, they decide that their next experiment would be to go on a holiday, and there, they realise that there is another threshold to cross for their goal of an ideal relationship, and that's the fact that neither of them actually care for anything outside of each other's company.
It doesn't matter what they do, there appears to be a plateau or baseline of experience whenever they do something together, meaning that the holiday doesn't feel special, and that it would be just as enjoyable to sit on a couch together and watch TV together all day.

Of course, they want to be able to feel like the holiday is a significant and special experience instead of their disappointing reactions, so the two then seek to figure out how it is they can be receptive to the experiences they have alone and together to the degree that these events feel significant and memorable.

What they do in order to be ready to enjoy their holiday from the start of the 3rd day of their expected to be extended holiday, is to practice this receptivity to significance by...
