The Shining Ending Explained

The Shining is today considered one of the best horror movies of all time. Leave it to legendary director Stanley Kubrick to create nightmares and scares by using one chilling location, furnishing it with outstanding visuals and great performances by his actors.

The movie is a pop-culture staple now, but when it was first released it was not immediately met with critical praise or box office glory. Today the movie still sparks plenty of debate about its symbolism and especially its chilling finale. Here's The Shining ending explained.

Or, the person in the 1921 photograph is Jack's own father, who previously stayed there.

While he sits at the bar staring into a mirror and hallucinating, he swaps personalities back and forth with his father. That is why there is the inconsistency of "Three goddamn years ago!" regarding the dislocated arm.

Jack is speaking as his father who hurt Jack himself as a child. It is the Torrance family cycle of abuse.

There are two Gradys. Delbert Grady and Charles Grady. Delbert Grady stayed in the hotel decades earlier and Jack read about him through his newspaper clippings. Charles Grady is the man who chopped his kids up of which Jack was told about in his interview. This is why Delbert Grady has "no recollection of that at all."

Delbert speaks to Jack as Jack's father who was staying there at that particular moment recreating 1921. Jack's father was the caretaker ("you've always been the caretaker").

"I'm not gonna hurt you. I'm just gonna bash your brains."

The best way to explain the ending of The Shining is to admit that it just can't be explained (:

I prefer the idea that as far as the Overlook Hotel is concerned, Jack is and always has been the caretaker. Other people can have their understanding of Jack and his life, but it doesn't make a difference to the Overlook. As soon as he died on the hotel grounds he was trapped; he belonged to the hotel and the hotel belonged to him.

Here's my one word explanation for the same ...REINCARNATION . Nikolsan's character is supposed to the reincarnation of the person shown in that photo who has gone crazy and committed murders in the past.

I've read an explanation once which made so much sense. It was the kid that was controlling the minds of his parents. Ultimately punishing his father for the abuse he has done to him.

The shining basically could be a movie within a movie though it has endless amount of theories which are possible however, jack was a writer and what could be a better story than a hotel set on an indian burial ground, could spark up a lot of ideas and imagination isn’t it ?

They should have done a sequel with the Grady Family . The book nor the movie tells us if Delbert Grady, s daughter had the Shining but I suspect she did as Grady explains that his daughter tried to burn down the hotel.
