A Qantas flight taking off from Perth Airport on Sunday caused part of the newly laid runway surface to be torn off.

Footage shared online, shows Qantas Flight QF71, bound for Singapore, moving along the Main Runway around 12:15pm before a large section of the runway was ripped up.

The incident led to a brief closure for urgent repairs and caused a 747 freighter to divert to Adelaide due to the runway length not being long enough to land.

The Main Runway was temporarily shut down and remained partly operational for the rest of the afternoon.
