The Elephanta Island
This island is a popular tourist destination because of the island's cave temples, the whole Elephanta Caves, that have been completely carved out of rock in the island hill. The notable thing is, the dating of the caves seems to be controversial. They were probably finished sometime between 450 and 750 AD. So, this complex is now UNESCO World Heritage Site.
So, how to reach this island?
The island is easily accessible by ferry from Mumbai, being about 10 kilometres travel from the south east coast of the island city. The Boats leave daily from the Gateway of India, taking about an hour each way.
History of Elephanta Caves
So, this collection of cave temples predominantly dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.
It consists of five Hindu caves and a few Buddhist stupa mounds that date back to the 2nd century BCE, as well as a small group of two Buddhist caves with water tanks.
This rock cut stone sculptures show syncretism of Hindu and Buddhist ideas and iconography.
The Cannon Hill
A trail up to the hilltop takes you to an old military post overlooking the harbour. Two cannons were placed here to protect the harbour from pirates.
