Beneath the surface of Lake Kivu, located on the border of Rwanda and the DR Congo, lies immense quantities of methane and carbon dioxide. If released, the gas could create a devastating explosion in the region. The government of Rwanda turned this threat into an opportunity. KivuWatt, a power plant located on a barge, harnesses the gas and turns it into energy. Extracted methane is sent through a pipeline to a facility onshore to be transformed into electricity. According to “Africanews”, KivuWatt produces around 30 percent of the annual electricity used in Rwanda. | March 9-10, 2023 |
