UAW president Shawn Fain on labor's comeback

Last year unionized auto workers who walked out at the big three car makers won generous contracts, making up for pay cuts they'd taken during the Great Recession. It marked a comeback for the labor movement, and a notable achievement for United Auto Workers president Shawn Fain, who came up the ranks as an auto plant electrician, and still carries his grandfather's union pay stub in his pocket. CBS News chief election & campaign correspondent Robert Costa talks with Fain about the increase in public support for unions; and about efforts to organize auto workers in Southern states that are traditionally less friendly to unions.

My grandfather, my father, and my stepfather were all union workers as steel workers. As a Home healthcare giver I didn't recieve a raise in pay for 7 years. Once we voted in a union I got my first. I will always believe in the worker and unions because WE Built this country.

I’ve been very lucky as a union member to not see a strike in my 37 years as a union worker. I have seen tough negotiations that almost lead to a walk out that never arrived. I hear what others are paid per hour in right to work states & it makes me cringe. I’m able to support my wife on one income. Have a modest income & afford to own a house in one of the most expensive parts of the country. Work with dignity & respect everyday. Have a future in retirement. All because I belong to a union.
My great grandfather died as a result of the Great Depression. He worked his entire life working 12 hour days, 7 days a week without a day off or a sick day. He did not belong to a union. When he was let go by his employer because he couldn’t count. They never offered him training to count fares on a trolley. They let him go. He had no benefits or retirement. He went for a walk one morning to never return. He was found floating in a pond face down a day later. His family had to burry him. That is what unions were about initially. Death benefits for members who died. There was nothing for the family post death. That’s a crime. The fat cats at the top won’t acknowledge that though.

Without the workers, CEOs have no products or services. The workers have the power. Use it.

My step dad didn’t like unions, even though he was represented by the UAW. Him and my mom worked in aerospace and benefited from the union. He complained that the union gave rise to mediocrity. That bad workers were able to get away with being lazy and didn’t have to be accountable for their work.

He died at 51, never getting to retire and get to benefit from the CBA. Fitting.

Let's also not forget that Tenants Unions are also Labor Unions!
Tenants WORK, we work to pay rent and keep a roof over our family's heads, food on our tables, clothes on our backs.
Tenants Unions and Labor Unions are ALL making a HUGE resurgence and I'm GLAD to see it!
Landlords and Employers are utterly taking advantage of workers.
Wages haven't gone up but our rent has, the cost of food, healthcare and our daily essentials just to get by are skyrocketing out of control.
Sure they say "inflation" is stabilizing but what ISN'T taken into account on inflation indexes are the consumable things everyone, especially working families, need to get by: Rent, Food, Transportation, Healthcare...these aren't measured by Inflation indexes.
So, news outlets are reporting incomplete information and not giving the full picture!

As President Biden said: "Wall street didn't build America, the Middle Class did!"
Let's add to this: "Landlords don't provide housing, carpenters, plumbers, construction workers, HVAC workers...THEY build and provide housing!"

Let's bring back "LandLord" As a Dirty Word!!

Worker income has significantly lagged behind increased costs of living and corporate profits for decades. It showed very clearly when workers stopped receiving raises after 2009 while C-suites got bonuses. The continued attacks from corporations to the government came to a head thanks to Bidenflation.
We MUST always keep the playing ground as fair as possible.
