I got used to doing it bare handed, when someone is falling jump and put your tag end down by your side, your own weight plus the stretch from a good rope will allow both the climber falling and the belayer less pull

I was belaying someone slightly heavier than me once, and when they fell it pulled my hand with the rope into the device, and I was left hanging a few feet off the ground only being held up with my hand painfully caught in the device

I had a belay device break on me while my friend was dropping from the wall. Had to jam my hand into the mechanism to get her to stop before she fell straight down 40ft. It hurt like a bitch.

I've only repelled in the military with a carribeaner and a swiss seat. Do belay devices work better? A few wraps and consistent control were all i ever needed.
