Lyrics:

I had this dream where I relished the fray
And the screaming filled my head all day
It was as though I'd been spit here
Settled in, into the pocket
Of a lighthouse on some rocky socket
Off the coast of France, dear
One afternoon four thousand men died in the water here
And five hundred more were thrashing madly
As parasites might in your blood
Now I was in a lifeboat designed for ten and ten only
Anything that systematic would get you hated
It's not a deal nor a test nor a love of something fated
The selection was quick, the crew was picked in order
And those left in the water
Got kicked off our pant leg
And we headed for home
Then the dream ends when the phone rings
"You doing all right?"
He said, "It's out there most days and nights
But only a fool would complain"
Anyway, Susan, if you like
Our conversation is as faint a sound in my memory
As those fingernails scratching on my hull

Someone may disagree, but this song should be considered one of their masterpieces. Gord's ability to tell the story, his intensity and passion sells it. And not to take anything away from the rest of the band, the layering sounds of the guitars just lends to the emotion of the song, making it haunting and heart-wrenching. It will always be one of my favorites.

As a Canadian, I'm damn proud of this band, and do wish they had more exposure world wide to prove how great Canadian music can be... but at the same time I'm happy to keep them pretty much to ourselves!

You know why Hip views aren't in the 10's of millions? Cause Gordie didn't sell out to the MAN! No regrets! Much respect!

Canadian poetry for our time. Deserves to be on school curriculums, it will, just wait. Another 10-20 years.

There are so many things I love about this song. I love how it ebbs and swells like the ocean itself along with Gord's singing. I love that it has no chorus. I Iove the raw emotion in the lyrics and their delivery... almost as if it was straight stream of conscience as opposed to written words. Just an amazing song.

A song with no structured verses and chorus...only THIS band can pull it off with extreme emotion and passion. Goose bumps every single time I hear this song.

My favourite Hip song ever....stop the world when this song plays (Remembered when Dan Ackroyd introduced The Hip on SNL to play this WAY BACK)

As a Michigander surrounded by the Great Lakes, I feel a connection to this song that I can’t really describe.

My favourite song of all time. I'm so glad they played it at the final show. One of my first concerts was a Hip show. It was at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg. I went with my dad and was about 12 years old. Boy did I feel cool wearing my new Hip shirt to school the next day. That was 20 years ago. Thanks THT, for some of the greatest songs ever written and memories I will cherish forever. Love you guys.

I love The Hip more than words can explain. Gord was so good at singing, and all his songs had such deep meaning. I'm 14 and Canadian. The Hip is probably my favourite band of all time.

Too bad we can't post pics HERE, back in the 90's they were in bobcaygen Ontario at a lodge, their water froze up and we were called to thaw the water lines, this was on a Friday, we got hammered with the boys and we stayed until Sunday when the water finally unthawed! What a fucking laugh I had, the best food, Beer, spirits, wine, and some extra curricular smoke! Thanks for the trip guys. I'll never forget that!!
