Okcoin CEO, Hong Fang Discusses Crypto with Randi Zuckerberg.
From investment banking and Wall Street to becoming one of the most high-ranking women in crypto, Okcoin CEO Hong Fang shares her journey and the future she envisions with the power of free markets and technology.
Key points covered in this video:
✔️ Hong Fang decided to go into investment banking after spending nearly a decade at Goldman Sachs. It took a leap of faith, challenged her original mental framework, and saw that something different is actually possible. "The biggest jump that I made is that when I look at money, I have to realize that money does not have to be issued by central banks. You don't really need a government backing to make it money."
✔️ Okcoin is one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world. As CEO, Hong shares how she envisions Okcoin as the most friendly, fun, and cool platform for people to get into crypto.
✔️ So many women are scared and insecure to get into crypto because they feel like they don't know a lot or they've missed the boat. Understandably our roles require us to be more conservative in dealing with money. "If you are afraid, just put $10 into it. Once you have skin in the game, you will start to learn about it right and figure out if this is something that you agree with or not. And that will not cost you too much. But it gets you to open a new door to learn new things and to see things differently."
✔️ The power of building free markets. "I was born in China in an age when free markets were first introduced to the country, and I saw the transforming power of it. You give individuals the liberty and freedom to exercise their own free will and make their own decisions. Somehow, when all of that is reflected in the price of the market, the right decision will be made collectively for the benefit of the whole society."
✔️ The future with cryptocurrencies is looking bright as it accounts for a $1.45-trillion market cap in January 2022. "We are still in that evolving phase, and I think there are still different possibilities. But I'm hopeful that with everyone in the industry contributing with all good intentions, something good will happen. Technology always wins." Hong Fang is CEO at OKCoin. Hong was Chairman and Chief Operating Officer at OKCoin. Before joining OKCoin, Hong most recently served as Head of Investment & Strategy at Giant Network, a Chinese developer and operator of massively multiplayer online (MMO) games, where she led investments in strategic growth areas and has included several emerging tech disruptors in her investment portfolio including OK Group. Before that, Hong spent eight years at Goldman Sachs in its New York headquarters and west coast office. She focused on M&A, capital markets, investment, restructuring, and various other corporate development activities for both traditional financial institutions and fintech companies. She is a graduate of Peking University in Beijing, China, and has her MBA in Finance, Accounting, and Entrepreneurship from the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business.
