It's release week for the various flavors of Ubuntu 18.04. Today, I'm looking at Xubuntu 18.04 "Bionic Beaver". The official release date is actually tomorrow so I'm reviewing this one day early, so this is technically a beta version but nothing should change between now and the release.

Good old XFCE... Might be a little old fashioned, but it's rock solid, does not make radical changes and is actually one of the most customizable desktops out there. Hope it won't be abandoned one day. Anyway, great review as always, hope to see one for Ubuntu MATE soon!

I tested Xubuntu 18.04 yesterday.
First thing I noticed was the fast booting and very quick respons overall (2 cores, 4GB, i7 6700k). It's realy far, far more speedy than e.g. Budgie.
Also, it uses 310MB on a fresh boot, so seems like Xubuntu is back on track for older pc's and pple who like the speed of a lightweight OS!

I like it!!

Nice review DT!

[ Smiles ] Xfce never disappoints.

I am predicting that Xubuntu 18.04 is going to be a huge hit within the Linux community.

Excellent review Derek! Of all the 18.04 releases, this is my favorite so far. I like to know where I am at all times so when I middle mouse click I see all of my desktops quickly. Not to many other distros can do this unless there is a way to activate this that I am not aware of.

He mentioned this running like a champ on a six year old computer. I run Xubuntu 18.04 on my 12 year old Dell tower, and it runs like a dream.

One of the two 18.04 distros that support 3D acceleration in Virtualbox. A very efficient distro it uses around 300MB of memory after the boot. It boots in 45 seconds from my HDD and the VM boots in 30 seconds and reboots in 6½ seconds (zfs memory caching and HDD striping).
If you install the Plank dock, it becomes a very user friendly and sexy distro too. I love the default green wall paper, it makes me feel very relaxed.

Ubuntu release 20.04 hype lol year 2020 woooot choo choo lol oh man, I just remembered, 20.04 release would make my Ubuntu/Linux experience 10 years old :O because my first linux distro ever was Ubuntu 10.10 :p that was right before they switched to unity desktop, and I have been using Ubuntu on and off ever since then. Wow that's a long time lol. The funny thing is I found my 10.10 cd that I burned like 8 years ago and I installed it on my cousins laptop and the internet worked on it, but couldn't update or install anything lol, but it worked! :O

I have 2 wide black vertical frames on the desktop narrowing the workspace - how do I remove them ? Cheers

What's the use of a clean desktop when it got no use at all, because all icons are disabled? I can't see stringency behind this ;)

Millions of people are still dependent on disc burning utilities. I think that may remain true for another decade.

Does Xubuntu have Telemetry in it like regular Ubuntu?

Great video. I've had a few issues with ubuntu mate 18.04, found manjaro Xfce too hard work, so i think I'll try Xubuntu 18.04. Having used Ubuntu in one flavour or another for years, I seem to just prefer the Ubuntu way of doing things! Performance wise my system should cope with the likes of kde / cinammon / gnome 3, I just prefer a straight forward traditional desktop environment which is plain, non flashy which lets me concentrate on my photo editing. So fingers crossed Xubuntu will work well for me!

If even Xfce haven't changed that much, then imagine LXDE...
Btw, would you try Lubuntu?

When a large % of people are going to run along with windows, don't you think it would be Imperative to show them how to set up xubuntu on a partition?
