*Modern aircraft carrier sits down with WW2 aircraft carrier*
Dad, I need to tell you something...

Aircraft carriers are honestly so insane. Someone said "screw it, were floating the tarmac right up their ass"

The carrier decks are angled that way so that carriers can land and launch aircraft at the same time.

“Why carriers aren’t straight” because they’re the queens of the sea.

Another cool fact is that the pilot hits the gas instead of braking hard as soon as he touches down on the carrier. This is to ensure that the plane doesn't end up in the water if it misses the arrestor cables and has enough speed to take off again.

It was a British innovation that the US adopted, much of carrier tech was originally British

Yup the British also gave you the ski slope for short take off (Harriers) and the steam catapult

Straight deck: when you return from battle with 0 lost planes n pilots but end the day with 4 destroyed, 7 damaged, 2 injured pilots, 11 flight deck crew, fire on the ship and a single kia, none to enemy fire

Landing on one of those must be genuinely terrifying those pilots are crazy

It's so if the plane doesn't successfully take off or land, the ship won't immediately run it over causing damage to its sonar dome or hull.

Concise, factual and actually ANSWERS THE QUESTION. It's shocking how many shorts fail to do that.

Thank you. Thumbs up and comment earned.

Also love how many people didn't listen to the end. "It's so they can do simultaneous launch and landing." Yeah. He said it's also that.

There's one additional reason: Should the landing aircraft overrun the landing zone, it will hit the water alongside the vessel, instead of immediately forward of it, where it wound be quickly overrun by the vessel itself.

I am a Navy Vet. NMCB 74. I really enjoy these historical Navy videos. Too bad you couldn't come up with more stuff about the Navy Seabees. They were very useful during world war 2 in the pacific. "Can Do" is their motto.

Thanks you for crediting this as a British invention. I hadn't realised my country pioneered this. 😊

The Brits invented this angled deck. Also the steam powered launcher and the Christmas tree landing light equipment. They pioneered the whole aircraft carrying concept in the first place.

Bonus: carriers are shorter with an angled deck, which makes it harder to hit them

Definitely makes for a more efficient system but it’s very hard for beginners to land on, especially if the ship is turning as you approach.

The British also came up with Armored Flight Decks.

Thanks a lot for answering my question.I had this in mind for a lot of time

It’s funny that the British essentially invented the modern carrier with angled deck and steam catapults. But they ended up with ski jump design instead.
