Le Mans (1971) - When Racing Was Cool

preview_player
Показать описание
A clip from the movie Le Mans, filmed during the actual 1970 Le Mans 24 hour endurance race, with super-cool Steve McQueen in the lead role. McQueen was a bona-fide racer, and this is real footage of genuine race cars at speeds of up to 200MPH (320KMPH), no CGI trickery. Turn up the volume.

COOL indeed! 😎 Absolutely: cars / McQueen / music / sounds and surroundings / year 1971. 50+ years ago (revisited in 2025) and still greatly enjoy the car design, challenging and grueling, unique culture of 24 Hrs of Le Mans.

Thank you for bringing this back! 👍 One of my all-time favorite car racing movies.

Vic Elford in the white Porsche 917L (#25) was a great sports car driver, he won the Monte Carlo Rally in a 911T, Targa Florio in a 907, the Daytona 24H in a 907, Nurburgring 1000km in a 910, …and many podium finishes for Porsche, a team he drove with for nearly his whole career. The man was a driving prodigy, many of these guys were exceptionally gifted. Nearly all drove in every category of motorsport back in the day. It wasn’t compartmentalised like it is now. Vic was doing 240+ mph regularly on the Mulsanne straight in the actual race just as you see him scorching the earth here in the movie. He’d probably have won Le Mans 1970 for real, instead of his Team Salzburg Austria buddies - Attwood and Herman. If he sat back and played a steady progressive game in a 917K like his team mates did to grab that famous 1st overall Le Mans win for Porsche in 1970. I bought a Porsche 928, a car I’ve loved since my teens and learned to drive it properly basically on the strength of Vic Elfords driving advice, tips and instruction in his book It was an epiphany after putting his advice into practice. I ended up keeping the car for 14 years, and sold it to a wealthy enthusiast who could look after it when my business went through a rough patch. I still miss the car terribly 10 years on. RIP Vic Elford 1935-2022

This was the movie that gave me goosebumps when it suddenly turned up on TV Christmas 1978. I still remember as teenager being glued to the new Phillips colour TV my dad got a week before. The beautiful cars, the serious life/death attention and deep concentration of the drivers, and then the glorious howl of the monster prototype cars engines duelling on the Mulsanne straight. For the first time I got a flavour of what I’d only heard about and seen glimpses of during the golden age of motorsport when I was a kid just 9-10 years earlier in the late 60s. It was simply magical.

Damn, I still get goose bumps and tears in my eyes when I hear the Porsche's engine after the last chicane before the start and finish. The whistling when A symphony of brute force

Masterpiece. I saw this film in 1971, when I was ten years old...

This movie still is the unreached benchmark when it comes to put racing onto the big screen. The racing scenes are so much better than these in "Le Mans 66" (and - of course - in nearly all other so called racing movies).

I can only imagine how disappointed McQueen must have been to have missed the sound effects from the 7 liter fords from just a couple of years before he was able to make this film …

These were the Real Machines.
Nowadays cars look like soaps with tires or ant eaters and the engines sound like a hairdryer.
Listen these engines it is Heaven.

3:08 you can see the affordable Porsche 914 (40), which in reality won 6th place overall, just behind the prototypes.

For all petrol heads out there! A stunning movie, lots of action and not much dialogue, perfect!

No CGI, wonderful in a good way. I think MAD Magazine did a spoof of the movie.
