The paradox of value - Akshita Agarwal

Imagine you’re on a game show and you can choose between two prizes: a diamond … or a bottle of water. It’s an easy choice – the diamonds are more valuable. But if given the same choice when you were dehydrated in the desert, after wandering for days, would you choose differently? Why? Aren’t diamonds still more valuable? Akshita Agarwal explains the paradox of value.

Lesson by Akshita Agarwal, animation by Qa'ed Mai.

I wasn't expecting the guy to propose with a bottle of water. That was funny.

The proposal at the end with the bottle of water was (pardon the pun) priceless.

Who else noticed that the movie was actually the script for the video?

To those of you who don't think this is a paradox: you are right. It was, however, a paradox to Adam Smith, who at the time had no concept of marginal utility. That concept emerged almost a hundred years later in what is called the marginal revolution.

This is not a paradox. Value is relative, that's all there is to it.

So profound yet simple message and animation. It inspires me to aspire to create more content at least remotely similar to this. Thank you.

More and more pizza does not become less valuable.

I don't see how this is a paradox, more like common sense. When you have an abundance of something, its value is diminished, but when you're lacking something that you actually NEED (especially if it's something that would keep you alive), it's priceless.

What I would actually call a paradox is how you can charge 100x more for a T-shirt just by slapping "SUPREME" on it

Where's the paradox? Each thing is worth more based on the situation
